The tournament joins the American and Aussie Opens in utilizing replay systems.
Video review technology are set to arrive at Wimbledon this year.
Competitors are granted the ability to question certain decisions made by the official, echoing the protocol already in place at both the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.
This technology will be operational on the main stadium and Court One for the duration of the Championships and on the remaining show courts when they are hosting singles matches.
This move arrives only a season following the AELTC implemented ELC, which terminated the 147-year role of line judges.
What Can Be Reviewed?
Players will not be permitted to challenge the accuracy of the ELC system, but they can request the umpire to review other situations, such as:
- Whether a tennis ball has bounced twice.
- Whether a shot touched an rival's racket or person on the way past.
- Possible interference at the conclusion of a rally.
Notably, there is no cap on the number of reviews a competitor can ask for.
A Recent Example
A recent case occurred in Indian Wells recently, where a top player initiated the video challenge against his opponent.
The British player admitted it was a difficult situation for the umpire, but believed his rival had "used the regulations effectively."
The umpire watched a replay and ruled Draper was responsible for hindrance, awarding the point to his opponent.
Broader Adoption
Video reviews aren't exclusive to Grand Slams. It was adopted at the American major for two years and the Australian Open this year.
Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the ATP circuit will have video reviews implemented at every one of its tournaments.
Other Changes
Another change at Wimbledon 2025 will be the addition of visual indicators on displays to complement the audio calls from the ELC system.
This addresses instances where the crowd have sometimes been unsure whether a shot was out or in.
Finally, with exactly a century of days remaining until the start of the tournament, the AELTC have also announced an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
