Top-Flight Headlines: Hannibal Suspended for Spitting; Guardiola Insists 'Back Line Has to Get Better'
In the latest Premier League developments, a key player has been handed a substantial ban, a manager has singled out a player's mistakes to prove an argument, and the Manchester City manager has called for defensive improvements after a wild win.
Mejbri Handed Four-Match Suspension and Financial Penalty
Burnley's midfielder Hannibal Mejbri has been issued a four-game suspension and a financial penalty for misconduct in a recent match versus Leeds United. The Football Association confirmed Mejbri faced a separate disciplinary panel after an incident where he spat towards visiting supporters around the 67-minute point of a 2-0 victory for Burnley.
A statement read: “A Regulatory Commission has sanctioned Burnley’s Hannibal Mejbri due to his actions during their top-flight match against Leeds on 18 October. It was alleged that he acted in breach of the rules of football and/or in a poor manner by engaging in offensive and/or indecent behaviour by spitting towards the direction of Leeds United supporters.”
The statement continued, “Mejbri later admitted the allegation, and the Regulatory Commission handing down a four-game ban and £15,000 after a hearing. The Regulatory Commission’s written reasons for the sanction are to be released in due course.” The team, now 19th in the table, travel to 12th-placed Newcastle this Saturday.
2. Maresca Points to Tosin's Errors to Prove a Point
Chelsea head coach Enzo Maresca has stated that a lack of experience is not an issue for his team, pointing out that centre-back Tosin Adarabioyo's years did not stop the 28-year-old from having a bad game in the loss against Leeds United.
The Italian coach, who manages the most youthful squad in the division, does not feel that inexperience was a factor in their setback. He presented his case by singling out Tosin, the oldest outfield player in the lineup, who produced a mistake-riddled display in central defence.
“People always mention a lack of experience after we fail to win,” Maresca stated. “After we defeated Barcelona, we drew against Arsenal, no one was mentioning older personnel. I know that if we lose, people are always searching for an explanation, but in my view the reason why we didn’t win against Leeds is not because of inexperience, it was because we were not good enough.”
He added, “Who is the oldest one on our team in the match? Who was? Did he play any good? Therefore, it’s not about his age. It's that those 11 men, they were simply not good enough.”
Guardiola Insists Defensive Solidity 'Must Improve'
The Manchester City manager has stated his team have taken lessons from their midweek thriller against Fulham with the game is now in the past. The team held on for a 5-4 win during a remarkable clash at Craven Cottage, having led 5-1 with about an hour gone.
Coming after they resisted a Leeds comeback to win 3-2 in their previous game, it raised further doubts about if City possess the defensive steel enough to mount a challenge to leaders Arsenal. “It’s behind us,” Guardiola said. “Valuable learnings, hopefully. In the Premier League, for every team, you have to take onboard both good and bad performances and bad things and focus on the next one.”
“Naturally I’m concerned,” he admitted. “We are trying to analyse what happened, to not allow so many goals. With the three goals scored against Leeds, and the five against Fulham it shows the two versions, correct? So, we have done plenty of positive things. But the number of shots on target did Leeds ? Three? Scored two. It’s not good. How many shots on target did Fulham have? Five, six? So, our ratio of chances conceded is is high. We must be better.”
4. Newcastle Focus on Livramento and Botman Deals
Newcastle United's recently appointed sporting director, Ross Wilson, has placed new deal negotiations with important backline players Tino Livramento and Sven Botman at the top of his agenda at St James’ Park. Wilson joined after leaving Nottingham Forest recently and was pleased that midfielder Sandro Tonali has a contract extending to 2029 and, potentially, 2030.
That has left Wilson free to focus on negotiations with Livramento and Botman's agents. Livramento's current deal ending in 2027 and the latter’s in 2028, Newcastle's talks have assumed a certain importance.
“My first three or four days after starting is when I found that Sandro’s contract situation was much more secure than I was expecting,” he stated. “However, it is no secret that the club wishes to extend Tino’s deal and also wants to renew Sven Botman’s too. Those discussions are underway.”
Head coach Eddie Howe will be without Botman against the home game against Burnley on Saturday, and he likely to be sidelined for at least a further period.
Nuno Says Paquetá Returns Against Brighton
The Hammers' head coach Nuno Espírito Santo has confirmed that Lucas Paquetá will return to the starting lineup when they play Brighton this Sunday, having completed a ban following a sending-off against Liverpool.
“It is in the past,” Nuno said. “I am positive it won't be repeated because he personally acknowledged the error. We discussed it internally. I am positive the matter is closed and it will not be repeated.”
Nuno also understands the significant pressure on his side, who are in the relegation zone before Saturday's matches. “We cannot avoid it,” he admitted. “It is the situation. We have to confront it. We're fighting for survival. We can't shy away from it.”
6. Arteta Pleased with No 9 Stand-in Merino
Mikel Merino could continue leading the line for Arsenal centre-forward despite the club's usual frontmen are fit again. Merino has been deployed as an emergency number nine due to fitness issues to Viktor Gyokeres, Kai Havertz and Gabriel Jesus.
He scored Arsenal’s opener against Brentford before assisting Bukayo Saka for their second goal in a 2-0 victory which preserved {their|
