The England manager Questions Home Fan Atmosphere Following Emphatic Win Over Wales.
Thomas Tuchel voiced his sadness that the England team did not get greater encouragement from the Wembley crowd during their commanding 3-0 friendly victory on Thursday night.
Tuchel was happy to see his team showcase their strong performance, with finishes from Morgan Rogers, Watkins, and Saka inside the opening quarter deciding the contest. But, he was not content with the energy at the iconic venue.
“We had one and a half training days to get ready against a drilled team and we did very well,” the coach commented. “We could have been 5-0 up at the break. We couldn’t score the fourth and fifth goals. There was little noise. We didn’t get any energy back from the crowd. We did everything to win.”
“What more can you give in the first quarter? We prevented them get away. When you only hear just the Welsh supporters for half an hour, it’s sad because the squad earned better encouragement today.”
“I support this statement. There’s nothing more than leading 3-0 in a derby. I hoped for a greater backing in phases where it is challenging.”
“After halftime, to get behind us, there was excessive support for Wales. It might have aided us to regain energy, but that’s football and so be it.”
Selection Choices Vindicated by Display
Away from potentially starting a dispute among fans, Tuchel also caused a stir by omitting Jude Bellingham and Phil Foden from his squad. Yet the choice was justified by Rogers delivering another standout performance in the attacking midfield role and netting his first international goal.
“That’s his style,” the head coach explained. “He operates as an attacking midfielder and he is fighting for his spot.”
Wales Manager Hopes for Lessons from Defeat
The Wales manager expressed hope that Wales, who face Belgium in a crucial World Cup qualifier on Monday, learn from their poor first-half display.
“That’s the reason I scheduled this friendly,” the manager said. “I need to see our standing. Where do we want to go? Who do we want to be? This performance fills me with inspiration.”
Fitness Worry for Watkins
Ollie Watkins was substituted at half-time after clattering into a goalpost and will be a doubt when the national team play Latvia in the Latvian capital in a qualifier on Tuesday.
