{'I could have killed them' - Lawson experiences dangerous incident with Formula 1 track officials
Formula 1 driver Liam Lawson stated he came dangerously close to a potentially deadly accident during Sunday's Mexico City Grand Prix when two marshals crossed the track right in his path
The dangerous situation happened on the third circuit when track officials were spotted on the circuit as Lawson was returning to the race following an premature pit stop to replace his damaged front wing
Driver's Immediate Reaction
Immediately after, the team's competitor Lawson communicated to his team engineer saying: "Are you kidding me? Could you believe what happened? I nearly... ended their lives"
"I genuinely couldn't process what I was witnessing"
"I rejoined with a new set of hards, and then I arrived at Turn One and unexpectedly appeared two dudes sprinting across the track"
"I nearly hit one of them, honestly, it was so dangerous"
Security Issues Highlighted
"Obviously there's been a miscommunication at some point but This is the first time I've faced that before, and I haven't really seen that in the past. It's completely unacceptable"
"We cannot comprehend how on a live track safety personnel can be allowed to just dash across the track like that. I have no idea why, I'm certain we'll get some kind of clarification, but this absolutely cannot recur"
Formal Inquiry in Progress
Formula 1's governing body, the International Automobile Federation (FIA), is thoroughly reviewing the situation
"Following a turn one incident, race control was advised that debris was present on the track at the turning point of that curve" stated the FIA
"In the third rotation, marshals were notified and made ready to enter the track and remove the wreckage once all cars had passed"
"As soon as it became apparent that Lawson had entered the pits, the directives to deploy marshals were rescinded and a caution signal was displayed in that zone"
"Our inquiry continues what happened after that point"
